What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a specialized form of exercise therapy designed to address and correct orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) or improper muscle functions in the mouth and face. It focuses on the muscles involved in essential functions such as breathing, swallowing, speech, and facial growth and development. Through various games, activities, and exercises, myofunctional therapy aims to improve muscle strength, coordination, and symmetry and promote proper breathing, swallowing, and tongue posture, laying the foundation for a lifetime of optimal oral health and overall well-being.

Key components of myofunctional therapy include breathing exercises and nasal hygiene to enhance proper nasal breathing, tongue posture correction to ensure the tongue rests in its natural position against the roof of the mouth, techniques to promote proper tongue placement and lip seal for correct swallowing, and jaw muscle exercises to improve strength and stability and reduce muscle tension. This contributes to benefits such as improved respiratory health, better sleep, improved ability to chew and manage foods, enhanced speech articulation and clarity, orthodontic support/prevention of orthodontic relapse, relief from or prevention of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort, and positive effects on facial growth and development.

What is an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD)?

Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are abnormal patterns of muscle function or use in the face and mouth that interfere with normal growth, development, or function of the orofacial structures. OMD’s can impact us throughout the lifespan.

Some examples of OMD’s in pediatrics include:

  • Mouth Breathing

  • Incorrect Tongue Resting Posture (Resting Low in Mouth or Between Teeth)

  • Tongue Tie

  • Tongue Thrust

  • Thumb Sucking, Finger Sucking, Prolonged Pacifier Use

  • Chewing and Swallowing Difficulties (Picky Eating, Food Refusals, Messy Eating or Drinking)

  • Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

  • Speech Articulation Disorders

  • Lip Sucking, Lip Biting, Lip Licking

  • Jaw Joint Issues (TMJ Disorders)

  • Facial Muscle Weakness or Asymmetries

How I Can Help

As an occupational therapist providing myofunctional therapy services, I am able to provide a more holistic approach, addressing not only the specific oral issues but also considering broader factors like sensory integration, fine and gross motor skills, and overall developmental milestones. Myofunctional therapy, when incorporated into occupational therapy, allows for a more comprehensive assessment and intervention strategy. By understanding the interconnectedness of oral motor skills with broader sensory and motor functions, I can offer a more specialized approach to help children overcome these challenges. This holistic care approach ensures that children receive well-rounded support, promoting not just improved oral health but also contributing to their overall developmental success and well-being.
